Smarter Recruiting Using Next-Generation Tech From EnticeLabs

May 1, 2009 Author: robertmerrill | Filed under: Couchcast Show

EnticeLabs is a Provo, Utah based company that was founded about two years ago to build technologies enabling companies to locate and recruit top-talent, while saving money over traditional recruiting practices.

Recently, EnticeLabs has been receiving a lot of buzz, with Recruiting Industry experts like John Sumser calling EnticeLabs “the deepest technology play in our industry since the dot com wave” and a recruiting industry “game changer” and Peter Clayton interviewing EnticeLabs’ CEO Ryan Caldwell on Total Picture Radio recently.

Ryan Probasco (left) and Grant Gordon of EnticeLabsWanting to get the technical side of the EnticeLab’s story, we* spoke with Ryan Probasco, VP Product Development and Grant Gordon Creative Director and Product Manager about what the technology does, who it is valuable for, and why a company might want to use EnticeLabs’ product rather than more traditional recruiting methods.

Interestingly, the development team at EnticeLabs uses Scrum/Agile programming, which Ryan and Thom spoke about at great lengths, comparing it to other methodologies like Waterfall, and large programming teams such as Ryan’s experience with large programming teams at Novell. Probasco notes that the Agile methodology works very well for small organizations and that he’s impressed with how people feel real ownership and step up to hard tasks sometimes much better through the Scrum system than they might in other programming methodologies.

Grant talks about how the EnticeLabs’ technology optimizes a recruiting department’s job advertising spending on-the-fly, and publishes it proactively across the Internet, leveraging the realization that most people are not spending all their time on job-related websites, rather they are visiting websites to research topics, hang out with friends, catch up with news, or other tasks.

“Traditionally, when companies try to hire people, they are very reactive… they go to HR… and they post on all the job boards, and they get [a lot] of candidates back and try to funnel them through that way.

“What TalentSeekr does, is it lets you to get in front of candidates that are [earlier in the job search cycle]. We call them ‘tip-toers’ or ‘googlers’ or ‘explorers’… but it really broadens your reach into this whole subsection of the job satisfaction curve that [HR departments and recruiters] have never been able to reach before.”

Sumser summarizes the EnticeLabs’ technology well with the statement:

The Entice Labs approach is to constantly monitor the performance of your career site, your job ads and your talent pool. It tests and retests the underlying sourcing hypothesis and makes changes and adjustments on the fly.

Richard BlissWe’re talking today with Richard Bliss, VP Marketing, Worldwide for Gwava, a company founded in 2001 with the intent to provide the very best solutions to the Novell GroupWise community.

Richard has been actively involved in the messaging industry since 1989 and is responsible for creating and executing the marketing vision for GWAVA. He is a published author and a popular speaker on subjects around messaging, outsourcing and e-mail security.gwava_logo See Richard’s blog posts at the GwavaNation Blog.

Richard is off a 35-city worldwide tour to discuss how Open Source and Freely-available Software is changing perceptions in the IT and Software industry, and why it may have taken this long for things to get to this point. Check out GwavaCon.com to catch up with Richard while he tours the globe.

He discusses the value of a “word” like “Safety“, like “Free“, control and “Proprietary“. He even discusses how a certain Silicon Valley company which is arguably more proprietary than its competitor to the North has somehow skirted that reputation.

Listen in as we talk with Richard about his thoughts on free software and how some of Microsoft’s most recent moves to become more like Apple may actually be opening the door for more and more people to jump to Open Source software.

Richard’s three things any organization can do right now to take advantage of this trend:

  1. Switch to Open Office for everyone in your organization who does not critically need it.
  2. Use Google Docs for remote employees and collaboration efforts.
  3. Run your email on a Linux server using Groupwise and switch Outlook for email clients like Thunderbird.

As an added bonus, listen through the show to find out how to get one of ten tickets for the premier of the new Star Trek (click link for trailer, info) on May 8th at the Provo Towne Cinema theatre, compliments of Richard’s employer, GWAVA (must be able to attend the event at your own cost… in other words, don’t ask for the tickets if you live in Luxembourg… or Indiana).
