Podcamp Salt Lake City 2009The ExtraLife comic strip was supposed to just be a hobby… something Scott Johnson did for fun in his spare time. Fast-forward a few years and its the leading edge of a bustling media empire Scott built through “passion and consistency”.

In this episode of the Couchcast, Thom Allen* and Robert Merrill talk with Scott about ExtraLife, his journey with podcasting, and what he’ll present as Keynote speaker of the PodCamp SLC event on March 27th, 2009.

The comic bred the ExtraLife Radio show, first launched as a downloadable MP3 file from his website, which exploded in popularity when iTunes made podcasting easy-as-pie.
Scott JohnsonThat success lent itself to creation of the Instance, the world’s most-popular podcast about the popular game World of Warcraft (WoW) or, how Scott explains it,  “a podcast about World of Warcraft that doesn’t suck.”

The Instance discusses “issues that matter most to players, including breaking news, in depth tips and strategies, and general commentary regarding the business of MMO’s, Blizzard, and the game we all love to play.”

All this success, Scott believes, can be boiled down to three main things he’s focused on over the last several years, and he will speak about as he keynotes the 2009 PodCamp SLC:

  1. “The Spaghetti Factor”
  2. “Community is King”
  3. “The Happy Convergence”

Listen to the show this week as Scott gives us a peek into these three topics, as well as a preview of what Podcamp Attendees are sure to enjoy from Scott and all the other presenters at this year’s Podcamp Salt Lake.

What is PodCamp?
A PodCamp is a somewhat BarCamp-style community UnConference for new media enthusiasts and professionals including bloggers, vloggers, podcasters, YouTubers, social networkers, and anyone curious about digital media.

There will be a full day of presentations, panels, breakout sessions and networking, with local digital media producers and online enthusiasts. Bring your laptop because you’ll have access to wireless internet. Twitter the experience. Live blog it. Record the sessions and use in your own podcasts. All presentations will be recorded for use later, and at the end of the day we will have put together a live podcast from the days event, so you can see what’s its like to put a show together.
